So, you’ve just purchased a new home – congratulations! It’s time to start packing, booking the removalists and settling in. Amongst the long to-do list when moving into a new home, there is one aspect that is often overlooked – the home’s security.  Here we detail why you should rekey your new home to ensure your valuables and loved ones are safe and secure.

What is rekeying?

Rekeying involves changing the locking mechanism so that the old key will no longer open it. A locksmith takes apart the lock to change the pins inside the barrel itself. Rekeying is a cost-effective way to guarantee that no one but you has keys to your new home, without you having to have the locks changed.

Why should I rekey my new home?

Rekeying the locks in your new home gives you peace of mind by guaranteeing that no one but you has keys to your home. It’s impossible to know who may have a key to your home or how many copies there may be circulating. If it’s an older home, you can’t be sure how many keys the former owners had or distributed to friends and family. The same goes for new builds – it’s impossible to know how many contractors may have had keys in circulation. Giving your locks a fresh start gives you full control over who has keys to your property moving forwards. It may also be a requirement for some insurance companies offering cover for home and contents.

What are the benefits of rekeying?

Safety and security are the key benefits of rekeying your home. However, it’s also a more cost-effective solution than changing the locks. Additionally, when rekeying your home you have the option to unify your locks to one key to save having multiple keys. This is called keyed alike.

We also recommend  rekeying your home after a break-in, particularly if keys were stolen.

Rekeying should be completed by a trade qualified, registered, licensed, police checked and fully insured Master Locksmith.
